Understanding Open Source
Metroecho.com
To most people open source is a strange concept. Its very hard to grasp how something that is free can be better than something we pay for. In light of all we have been taught about the invisible hand of economics this is concept is irrational. Yet, It is my opinion that this concept will not only radically change the software industry but the very nature of modern economics. The radical nature of open source was once compared to someone building an F15 Fighter Jet on their kitchen table. The fact is that we have passed a tipping point where all other software will be left behind. If its not open source you don't want to touch it. Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst... "We wouldn't feel comfortable servicing a car with the hood welded shut, and we shouldn't feel comfortable driving around 100 million lines of closed-source code. We are using 20th century development models for developing software that go into these products.... We are likely to see innovation slow significantly over the next decade if we don't adopt open-source development or open-source principles." What we should consider is that open source has no incentive to sell you a new product, it will not change on you and cause you to purchase new software. In the development of open source every effort is made to reduce the cost of adding new technology.
